You might have seen a man in a tuxedo with a French beard, taking a puff after shooting his enemies in Hollywood movies. Not to disappoint the opposite sex, you might have seen ladies (obviously, not wearing a tuxedo!) doing the same too. Pretty cool, haan? But guys, after the credits roll, the film ends. Your lives might end abruptly while indulging in smoking.
According to the latest data given by the Indian Health Ministry, the cigarette consumption was about 93.2 billion sticks. There are approximately 120 million smokers in India, out of which 5 million belong to the adolescent population. This is owing to the fact that cigarette packs are easily available in small petty shops. The diseases caused due to smoking affect almost every organ in the body. Prominent among them being Lung Cancer, Heart problems, Type 2 Diabetes, age-related macular degeneration (partial or complete blindness that usually affects adults above the age of 65) etc. The other health problems caused are decreased immunity, premature aging of skin, bad breath and so on. Eventually, the smoke ring will form a noose around your neck and strangle you.
Smoking not only puts your life in danger but also risks the lives of the people around you. Remember, by burning your lungs, you are hurting your kith and kin. Every year in the United States, it is estimated that about 42,000 people die from passive smoking.
I agree that it is difficult to quit smoking due to the highly addictive substance called nicotine. When this substance is inhaled, it rushes to the brain and causes a temporary feeling of pleasure and reduction in stress levels. Seek help from a counselor and work on ways to get rid of this habit. There are tablets available too. Take them only with the prescription from a qualified medical practitioner. It is said that an idle mind is a devil’s workshop. Find a new hobby for yourself to keep the devil at bay. It’s never going to be easy to quit. But if you don’t, there is a probability that you might contract cancer and the fight against it is going to be physically exhausting and emotionally draining.
In the end, I would like to quote the disclaimer that you might have heard before the commencement of a movie or read in a cigarette ad:
“Smoking is injurious to health. Tobacco use leads to cancer, heart attacks, lung disorders and other deadly diseases“
